The Ford 4R-100 transmission was originally designed to be placed behind the gasoline engine. It is a modified or upgraded version of the early E4OD transmission that was in service from 1989 to 1998. This approach allowed the original designers to use existing tooling to manufacturer the transmission at a less expensive manufacturing price. Of course, the cheaper price of manufacturing means it cost more on the other end when building the transmission to hold big power or tow heavy loads. On a positive note, the technology that is utilized in the transmission is sound, there is no �clutch to clutch� timing that needs to be controlled by the computer and the clutch pack size is adequate for the power that the 4R-100 needs to be able to handle even with a modified Diesel engine.
ATS has developed a combined technology utilizing recalibration of the hydraulic circuits inside the transmission, including revamped accumulator rates, reprogrammed clutch apply rates, accumulator fill time, and line pressure rise to perfectly match the torque output of the engine. These enhancements, along with other key hydraulic modifications, which ATS invents, must be done to ensure the clutch packs have the correct apply and release rates when commanded on or off. As well, the transmission hard parts have many limiting weaknesses, which do not allow for increased power levels over stock. Specifically, the light duty shafts, clutch hubs, one-way diode, small pump, weak planets and wimpy torque converter must all be addressed.
